Welcome to the Cancer Research Foundation…

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death. About 1,658,370 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2015 and in the same year about 589,430 Americans are expected to die of cancer (or about 1,620 people per day).

We believe that these statistics are unacceptable. The Cancer Research Foundation is a United States, a tax-exempt, 501(c)3, public charity that was created to raise awareness about the importance of cancer research and the ongoing need for cancer research funding. This year, we are proud to support the innovative research programs at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, and UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Together, the research conducted at institutions such as these has resulted in discoveries that allow for earlier diagnosis of certain cancers and improvements in treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed in 2004-2010 was 68%… up from 49% in 1975-1977. We are working to see survival rates continue to rise exponentially.

The goal of the Cancer Research Foundation is to see survival rates reach 100% and, ultimately, to become obsolete.

“The aim of medicine is to prevent disease and prolong life;
the ideal of medicine is to eliminate the need of a physician.”

This quote by Dr. William J. Mayo reflects the mission of the Cancer Research Foundation…”to raise funds to support innovative cancer research centers focused on perfecting treatments, vaccines, and cures to the over 200 different types of cancer; and, ultimately, to become absolutely obsolete.”

Our Funding Recipients

The Cancer Research Foundation was established to draw attention to the need for cancer research, to provide useful information and resources, and to raise funds for top research facilities across the nation. We consciously support diverse and innovative centers in the expectation that each institute will find a different piece to the puzzle and that, together, will find a cure or cures to the over 200 types of cancer.

Each selected research center has been recognized by their peers for excellence and is ranked as a Comprehensive Cancer Center (conducting programs in all three areas of research: basic research, clinical research, and prevention and control research). Our recipients for this year are…

UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is dedicated to three fundamental pursuits: laboratory research into the causes and events of cancer; clinical research leading to treatments; and population research to improve the quality-of-life for those living with cancer.

Mayo Clinic Cancer Center

The Mayo Clinic’s research is focused on developing new and better ways to predict, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of cancer. Its innovations span “research bench to bedside,” bringing laboratory discoveries to the care of patients.

UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center

The UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has established an international reputation for developing new cancer therapies, providing the best in experimental and traditional cancer treatments and expertly guiding and training the next generation of medical researchers.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

The world’s oldest and largest private cancer center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has devoted more than a century to patient care as well as to innovative research, making significant contributions to new and better therapies for the treatment of cancer.

About the Cancer Research Foundation…

The Cancer Research Foundation is a United States, a tax-exempt, 501(c)3, public charity that was created to raise awareness about the importance of cancer research and the ongoing need for cancer research funding. The Cancer Research Foundation is designed to encourage local funding events for cancer research, to bring awareness to corporate and planned giving options, and to encourage innovative and creative cancer research funding options; all while minimizing internal operating expenses so that the maximum percentage of each donation truly goes to cancer research.

This year, donations received by the Cancer Research Foundation will benefit the innovative research programs at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, and UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
